Emanuel Frey began playing classical piano in the early eighties and soon after began improvising. Entertaining from the stage with spontaneous ideas became one of his musical passions. Emanuel has also played in rock bands and toured as a keyboardist.

In 2008, Emanuel finished his studies at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHDK) with a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Composing, Arranging and Music Production, and a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Computer Music. Subsequently, he traded melody-oriented composition for a more beat-focused approach and began using Ableton Live, moving from a linear to a live production workflow. Emanuel has created and shared various Max for Live plug-ins to enhance Live's functionality, which are used by hundreds of musicians around the globe.
In 2011, Emanuel founded the Ableton Live User Group Zürich, a Switzerland-wide User Group centered around Ableton Live as a production tool. He organizes events and meetings as part of this initiative.
Emanuel has been an Ableton Certified Trainer since 2013 and offers individual private lessons for Ableton Live in English and German. He also teaches the Ableton Live Intro Producer and Ableton Live Advanced Producer courses at the School of Sound in Zurich.
Emmanuel founded the School of Sound in 2015 with the aim of offering modular and affordable classroom courses for electronic musicians. For beginners, advanced and professional musicians, single courses and course bundles are offered as diplomas with three and five courses. The School of Sound conducts virtual classroom courses via Zoom as well as classroom lessons. School of Sound Online also offers a growing number of masterclasses, online courses and an active online community.
The School of Sound operates online and in Switzerland’s three largest cities: Bern, Basel and Zurich.
